“Form men and women for others” – 50 years of a historical discourse of Fr. Pedro Arrupe SJ
On Saturday 27 May 2023, a hundred Jesuit alumni from Spain and all over Europe met at the San José School in Valencia. The meeting was organised by the Spanish Federation of Jesuit Alumni and the European Confederation (ECJA), with the support of the World Union (WUJA).
The event celebrated the 50th anniversary of the speech given by Father Pedro Arrupe SJ, then Superior General of the Society of Jesus, to the 10th Congress of the European Confederation on 1 August 1973. In this speech Pedro Arrupe first used the expression “form men and women for others”, which has since become symbolic of the Jesuit educational project.
In addition to an exhibition tracing Pedro Arrupe’s life and a series of speeches, the commemoration included an audiovisual report on Father Arrupe and his famous 1973 speech, as well as testimonies from various personalities on Pedro Arrupe’s vision of Jesuit education and its repercussions over the last half-century. The event closed with a lecture on Pedro Arrupe by Father Darío Mollá SJ, theologian and specialist in Ignatian spirituality.
