Strengthening Global Ties: WUJA Council 2024 at Sophia University, Japan

In October 2024, the World Union of Jesuit Alumni (WUJA) convened its highly anticipated Council meeting in Japan, attracting key leaders and members from various regions worldwide. Held at the prestigious Sophia University in Tokyo, the event was a crucial opportunity to strengthen WUJA’s global mission, which focuses on fostering collaboration and social action among Jesuit alumni. The primary aim was to enhance WUJA’s global impact, especially by deepening ties with Jesuit institutions and empowering its youth wing to take a more active role in social initiatives.

Members had the opportunity to engage with the Jesuit Provincial and Sophia University Alumni Association and discuss plans to support communities facing challenges. Their thoughts were with those in need as they collaborated to strengthen the global community. Representatives from Jesuit High school’s Alumni associations were also introduced.

This Council meeting not only provided a platform for sharing ideas but also allowed for a deeper reflection on how WUJA can inspire alumni to live by the Jesuit value of being “persons for others.” Through various strategic sessions, the participants engaged in thoughtful discussions about the organization’s future direction, with a particular emphasis on the global mission to promote justice and inclusivity. The agenda included reviewing key survey results, evaluating current projects, and outlining plans to extend WUJA’s reach and communication on a global scale.

A significant highlight of the event was the encounter and invitation offered to WUJA by Sophia University Alumni Association (SUAA). This partnership is seen as pivotal for building stronger educational and social ties within Japan.

The Council’s activities were complemented by a series of cultural experiences that enriched the participants’ understanding of Japan. These included a traditional Tea ceremony and a Tour of the Sophia University campus, allowing attendees to immerse themselves in the cultural heritage of the host country. Additionally, a special reception hosted by SUAA provided an informal setting for Council members to network and explore further opportunities for partnership and social projects.

A heartfelt thank you to our wonderful Japanese hosts for their warm hospitality and insightful exchanges!
