The Council of the World Union (WUJA)

The Council of the World Union is the executive body of the Union.

The General Assembly is the supreme body that repre-sents all the member associations and decides on their behalf. The General Assembly makes the major decisions including the election of the members of the Council and their positions (president, vice-president, secretary, treasurer). The General Assembly also votes on resolutions and decides where the Congress will be held. The General Assembly meets once every four years, on the occasion of the Congress.

Between the congresses, the Council, elected by the General Assembly, makes the decisions pertaining to the Union’s action (upon the proposal of the President).

In particular, it approves the budget and annual accounts, it decides about the actions to pursue, about the collection of the contributions, the implementation of the resolutions adopted at the Congress, the communication (newsletter & website), the preparation of the next Congress.

The Council consists of officers (president, vice-president, secretary, treasurer) and thirteen representatives of major regions of the world as follows:

  • two each for Africa, South Asia, Europe, Latin America and North America
  • one each for the Middle East, East Asia and Oceania

It is assisted by the Jesuit Counsellor (appointed by the Father Superior) who is there to notify the World Union priorities of the Society of Jesus and in turn inform the Society of concerns and actions of the World Union. Associated to the Council are former presidents of the World Union, as honorary members, officials of the association Pedro Arrupe and delegates of the “Youth Wing” representing the younger generation involved in the activity of the Union.
